70-year-old man dies in house fire near Birmingham’s Smithfield neighborhood

BIRMINGHAM, AL — A 70-year-old man was killed early Saturday morning after a fire broke out at a boarding home in the Smithfield neighborhood of Birmingham, according to AL.com.

Crews with Birmingham Fire and Rescue Service responded to the incident in the 100 block of 4th Avenue North at 1:30 a.m.

When they arrived, many residents had already managed to evacuate the home, but one remained trapped inside.

After firefighters put out the fire, the they discovered a man in his bedroom, and pronounced dead at 1:45 a.m.

An investigation into the incident is underway.
